Description
Northeast Park is a 374-acre recreation and sports park. There is a wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities available including an aquatic center, athletic fields, picnic shelters, a merry-go-round, and playgrounds. In addition, the birder will find more than 10 miles of trails, some of which are designated for biking and equestrian use in addition to strictly hiking trails. About 5 miles of trails are exclusively for equestrians.
The park is at the confluence of two streams, Reedy Fork Creek and Buffalo Creek, and where the park hasn’t been developed for sports, has extensive hardwood forests and a few meadows. Consequently, the variety of habitats attracts many species of birds as well as a great variety of native wildflowers.

This is a relatively new park that hasn’t been thoroughly explored by local birders at the time of this writing. All of the expected common upper Piedmont birds are likely to be here. It will be fun to discover the bird species that occur in the park as birders become familiar with it.
