Description

Although located in Jamestown, NC, High Point City Lake Park is administered by the adjacent City of High Point. The park primarily is a recreation park on a 350-acre lake. The lake is used for fishing and boating. There also is a large public pool for swimming and a large playground with a carousel plus other amenities such as a gymnasium and miniature golf. There is no entry charge but fees are charged for the amenities.

Because of the family-oriented recreational opportunities, the park can get quite crowded in the warm season. While birds can be found during this period, especially early in the day, fall and winter sees much less human activity. A good strategy in any season is to enter the park and bear left to the marina. There is parking here and also along the road as it continues around to a wooded picnic area that extends into the lake on a small peninsula.

When the human activity is low, there can be good birding by walking along this end of the lake and checking the shrubs and trees. Before long you will come to a larger parking lot for the picnic area. The edge of the parking lot and the closed road that goes away from the lake for about 200 yards can be birdy. Walking out on the peninsula affords a view north up the lake and east to the marina.

Most of the typical woodland edge birds may be found here. If there isn’t much boating activity, ducks can be seen out on the lake. Watch for Great Blue Herons, which probably nest somewhere around the lake. Pay special attention to any large dark birds flying over; there has been a pair of Bald Eagles nesting on an island in the far north end of the lake out of sight of the marina.
