On Saturday, November 9, 2014, eight PBC members braved a cool but beautiful morning and strolled along the Hamilton Lakes trail and Bog Garden boardwalk. These members were Anne Presnell, Roberta Newton, Ann Van Sant, Carolyn Allen, Jim Stinson, Peggy Young, Emily Tyler, and leader Jim Strickland. The action happened quickly on Hamilton Lake trail as the birds were very active on this cool morning.
Later at the Bog Garden boardwalk, we had the show of the day, as a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk had captured a squirrel and was eating it. He was not going to be deterred from enjoying his meal. He was sitting on a limb 10 – 12 feet above the boardwalk. People walked under him and the hawk did not budge a feather. We watched for twenty minutes or more and took pictures from every angle. After the trip was over, I went back and took more pictures and he was still there after thirty minutes.
During the trip we identified 27 species. They were:
American Crow Northern Flicker
Blue Jay Northern Mockingbird
Brown-headed Nuthatch Red-bellied Woodpecker
Carolina Chickadee Ringed-neck Duck
Carolina Wren (5) Ruby-crowned Kinglet (20)
Cooper’s Hawk Song Sparrow
Downy Woodpecker Tufted Titmouse
Eastern Bluebird Turkey Vulture
Eastern Towhee White-throated Sparrow
Fish Crow (10) White-breasted Nuthatch (25)
Great Blue Heron Yellow-breasted Sapsucker
Hermit Thrush Yellow-rumped Warbler (27)
Northern Cardinal (15)
